All I Need to Know About Life I Learned From Star Wars…

I used to look at this poster and laugh. Wasn’t it amusing how there is a Star Wars moment to help with all of life’s situations…only today I don’t feel like laughing…
I just received a phone call earlier today that my big brother is dead.
He was only older by thirteen months and for the beginning of our lives we were partners in crime. I remember us sitting in the front seat of the family Dodge as we sat waiting for our parents. The car was parked at the end of the driveway, which was a 30 degree incline. My brother would put the car into neutral; we would jump together into the backseat; and “Whee!” our way backwards into the street.  It seemed like a good idea at the time; and was a cheap form of entertainment for two thrill seekers like us. Knowing my parents the way I do, I’m sure the punishment was swift and decisive. Most importantly, it is long since forgotten.
My brother and I were always getting into trouble together. When I was a kid my big brother was my hero. He taught me to run, throw and punch like a boy. These were crucial skills to me as the neighborhood tomboy. When he was old enough to go to school, and I wasn’t, I convinced him to hide me in his backpack so that he could sneak me into kindergarten.  Needless to say, my parents stopped him when he couldn’t lift his backpack on his shoulder. They opened it up and there I was.
When I was finally old enough to go to school, it was my big brother who held my hand and walked me to my first class. My kindergarten teacher had to coax him into leaving me there and told him that I would be fine, but that he could come back after school to take me to our bus if that made him feel better. During those pre-teen years my brother was my best friend.
As we grew older and each had our own lives; we became more and more distant. He had his life and I had mine. So when I received the call about his passing, I initially felt as if I didn’t even have a right to mourn him. I mean, I hardly knew who he was anymore.
Then, I remembered my Star Wars…Luke and Leia. Luke and Leia literally grew up on different worlds. After brief moments together, the two twins grew into adults without ever knowing that the other existed. Yet, when first they met, there was an instant connection between them. I long since outgrew the initial nausea that accompanies that ill-fated kiss between Luke and Leia in Empire, but if you truly look at their relationship it makes complete sense.
Here is some girl Luke has never met, yet he is instantly drawn to her. For Leia, the ease and trust she felt for Luke was also instantaneous. I could see how to such similar and romantic figures might think that they were in love. For Luke, I think it was the only explanation that made sense to him. Why would I feel such a connection to a complete stranger unless I’m in love with them?
In time, it became obvious to Luke that he did in fact love Leia, but only as a sister.
The lesson here is that time, distance, nor absence can break the binds that tie us together. Luke learned this lesson so well that he was able to redeem his absent father.
Though my big brother and I had grown apart due to distance and circumstance, I know that the time we shared together in our youth fighting our own ‘rebellion’ can never be erased and that he, like the Force, will be with me, always!

Far and Wide...The Force's Reach Is!

Last weekend my husband and I took our daughter to an anime convention in Orlando.  While my daughter is a Star Wars fan (She was bred that way.), she is also an anime/manga fan. After ditching her at Celebration V so that I could get a Dark Horse freebie, I promised that we would attend AFO as restitution. I must admit that I do watch some anime and have Star Wars manga that I love, but it never occurred to me to attend an anime convention.

I'm so glad we went. Not only did I gain some RPG knowledge in the Mass Effect panel (I'm gearing up for SWTOR since I'm a Noob.), but I also picked up some Star Wars swag and made contact with other Star Wars fans.

Pew Pew!
The best moment of the entire convention was when we ran into another Star Wars fan and found out that AFO was their first convention ever. I will call them Spidey and MJ (He was also a Spider-man fan, as am I - 'Nuff Said!)  Spidey was really enjoying the AFO convention. He and MJ were fairly new residents of Orlando and had been living there during Celebration V and didn't even know that it had occurred.

"Celebration V? What's that?" Spidey asked.

After picking myself up from the floor I learned that Spidey was a passionate Star Wars fan. His fiancĂ©e, MJ,  was standing there conferring with my husband about what it was like to be engaged to a UPF of Star Wars. MJ shared tales of vanishing space in their home that had succumbed to Spidey's Star Wars collection as my husband nodded his head in agreement. He listened to her as the spouse of an life-long alcoholic listens to a newlywed who has just found out their spouse drinks. His gentle sighs comforting her as they simultaneously told her that his own tribulations in that department were much worse since I was an 'old school' fan since the release of the original trilogy.

After learning that he had missed the biggest party this side of the galaxy, Spidey looked down trodden and dejected. His face frozen in grief. As if to say, there’s a recurring Star Wars convention and I didn't know about it. I had just told him that not only had he missed a convention center full of Star Wars swag that would make any fan's mouth water; but he also missed among other things: Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, George Lucas and the chance to commune with other fans just as insanely passionate as ourselves.

After sharing stories about our favorite moments from the prequels, (Spidey was introduced to Star Wars through their theatrical release.) I advised him that he must immediately get online, join theFORCEbook and the Star Wars Celebration VI group.

My mission in life was finally apparent to me. It was my vocation - dare I say my calling - to let other Star Wars fans know about Celebration, The FORCEbook and the myriad other ways available for them to share the Force with other Star Wars fans. As Yoda said, “Pass on what you have learned.”

The other pivotal moment during AFO came when I saw the one thing I have been looking for ever since I first laid eyes on the gaggle of Slave Leias at Celebration VI. I have mentioned in previous blogs that there must be some brave male souls out there who could supply eye candy for the rest of us pining away for scenes reminiscent of Luke a la Bacta Tank.

Well I found him!

While waiting on the side of a hallway for the next panel to begin, Darth Vader, wearing nothing more than a helmet and a tiny Speedo, strutted past me Empire-Strikes-Back-style in all his glory. I wish I could say that I have a photo for you, but I was struck both dumb and paralyzed. Before I had time to fully recover, I later saw both a Boba & Jango Fett that were similarly clothed.

All I can say is...

Thank the maker for fanboys!

The Empire Struck Back!

If you saw the Empire Strikes Back in the 1980s and had to wait three long years to find out how everything turned out (Was Darth Vader Luke's father? Would Han Solo ever be thawed out? Why wasn't Yoda worried and who was "another"?), then you know what my past two weeks have been like. I am beyond frustrated. After being in an auto accident with a commercial, uninsured motorist, I know that the Sith are alive and well.

Don't be fooled by their seemingly cool, sexy exteriors
 - these #$%@ are EVIL!
In Empire, the Rebels were constantly on the run and couldn't catch a breath. They had to hide out on a planet so cold that people from northern Siberia don't want to go there. Their ice base was attacked by what would eventually be the coolest toy you ever laid your eyes on.

How can you fight it if you can't take your eyes off it?
Then to be relentlessly pursued by Darth Vader, sending Han, Leia, Chewbacca & C-3PO into a harrowing asteroid chase all to end up in their eventual defeat that ended with Han being tortured and frozen and Luke in need of physical and psychological rehabilitation. After dealing with insurance companies, I think I know how they felt.

I remember being so swept up in the story that I didn't realize that the film was coming to an end until John Williams' score swelled. Just remembering that viewing of Episode V, even though it was devastating, still leaves me breathless and excited. Now that I think of it, all things considered, I would rather deal with the Empire than my own an insurance adjuster. I wonder if the Rebels had No-Fault coverage?

I'm really not sure which is scarier.

Get Ready to Suck Some Canned Air!

I grew up in Southwest Florida and my father felt that it was mandatory that we learn to swim. Ever since then I have loved the water, swimming and Jacque Cousteau. So when I met my husband-to-be and found out that not only did he know the film origin of "All too easy" but also had his C-Card I was a goner. The man had grown up summering on a lake in Canada, was completely comfortable in the water and could hold his breath so long I thought he was part dolphin. I wasn't certified at the time but had always wanted to learn to scuba dive - I had found my dive buddy for life.  I eventually got my NAUI certification and the dive was on!  I must admit that it was nearly impossible to breathe canned air in the beautiful silence of Floridian fresh water springs without thinking of Darth Vader.

Now with the advent of Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season Four this Fall and the Water War teaser , two of my passions have merged: Star Wars and Scuba! I was just talking with an online friend of mine, @Jedi58 - who recently got his advanced open water certification, and saying that we need a Star Wars canned-air group and that Master Kit Fisto could be our mascot. I know Master Fisto doesn't need canned air, but how could you go wrong with those gorgeous tentalocks swaying in the water?

I didn't need any assistance getting excited about season four of the Clone Wars but knowing that this great water battle is on the way and a possible introduction to It's-a-trap Ackbar I think I have blown an O-ring.

Neither Sleet, Nor Snow, Nor Car Accident Can Keep Me From Star Wars!

Asteroids and obstacles may not concern Lord Vader, but they definitely get my attention.

Here's the family car, my daughter named him Hubble, all decked out for Star Wars Celebration V
Here's a slide show of him now post accident. The pictures don't look as bad as it felt from the inside thankfully.

Basically, I was in a car accident and banged up pretty good but still took my medication, got some sleep and then FORCEBooked until the pain became too great. I guess theFORCEBook is my version of a Bacta Tank. Check out my full article, Always in Motion is the Future, at theFORCEBook.com.

The New Hope: Pass On What You Have Learned!

A New Hope

I sense a disturbance in the Force. A lot of fans seem to be trepidacious because of several closings in the star wars universe: Star Wars Hyperspace ending this year 2011, Star Wars Galaxies ending this year 201l, Star Wars Forums ended this year and the Star Wars Shop closing July 18, 2011.

"From 2004 to 2011, Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club was the Lucasfilm-run organization for Star Wars fans worldwide created to unify and spotlight fan activity, give exclusive inside access to Star Wars productions, provide a way to buy really cool exclusive stuff, and most of all... to celebrate Star Wars."

It seems the intention of all of these star wars components are the same  - the celebration of Star Wars. The Force can be seen from both light and dark perspectives and I think we fans need to view this from the light side (Hey, I'm a Jedi at heart.) I know that when it comes to Star Wars I seem to be a cup half-full type and never have a bad thing to say about it. Go ahead think it - I embrace that. Star Wars is the bright center to the universe for me and always will be. We are not losing anything. Star Wars is alive and well on the internet:

I know I have left off many sites. More than I can ever list here, but these are just a few that I frequent. And that is the point really isn't it? Lucasfilm is concentrating on giving us what we can't give ourselves: Star Wars: The Clone Wars television show, Star Wars on Blu-Ray this September 12th internationally and 16th in North America, Star Wars Saga in 3-D in theaters starting February 2012, Star Wars: The Old Republic (someday), Star Wars Celebration VI and so much more.

What we need to take from this comes from one of my favorite scenes in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi when Master Yoda tells Luke, "Pass on what you have learned." Yoda is speaking to all of us. George Lucas has known from the beginning that it is not only the franchise but mainly the fans that will keep the Force alive. So these closings are not a downturn in the Star Wars universe but Lucasfilm reorganizing their efforts because they know that the fans have got it covered.

Our role in the Star Wars universe is to pass on our Star Wars experience: Jedi, Sith, smugglers, bounty hunters all creatures great and small. As long as we do this, we do not have to fear Yoda's passing or that of a few websites.

Just like Luke and Leia, the next generation of Skywalker, were the new hope in the Star Wars Saga, we fans are the New Hope. We are the Hope that has always been what has and will keep Star Wars alive.

So I have to find a new place to buy my Yoda slippers, I will survive and grow stronger in the Force because of this new challenge - we all will.

The Force Will Be With Us Always!
